5th Chicago Dancing Festival

June is about spring busting out all over, July is for family bbq’s and fireworks, but August is serious summer. August is when baseball teams pull away or fold, when football players start hitting each other for real, and when dance in Chicago pulls out all stops for some of its biggest events of the year. (No, that is not a ham-handed way of trying to make dancers look like athletes. Dancers are athletes and artists rolled into one, and what they do to their bodies would make Brian Urlacher cry like the Speaker of the House.)

En Route

I’ve walked through the sidewalks, alleys and pedways of Chicago’s east loop many hundreds of times, but I’d never inhabited them so fully until Chicago Shakespeare Theatre lured me downtown with an e-blast to try something called “en route,” an interactive theatrical experience created by an innovative Australian troupe called “one step at a time like this.”

I recently attended the Chicago Dancing Festival kick-off party, and you couldn't have asked for a more welcoming, enthusiastic invitation to come join the festival.
