A Tribute to Sir Andrew Davis

COVID disrupted our personal lives. Huge moments in our lives, the times when we expected to be able to join together, were completely disrupted.

For years, Lyric Opera had planned a glorious farewell for Sir Andrew Davis, their music director and principal conductor for more than twenty years. Plans for the glorious concert Celebrating Sir Andrew Davis were in motion and there was no changing their timing.

Not even in the face of a pandemic.

So what did Lyric and HMS do when audiences couldn’t attend and musicians couldn’t sit next to each other? Reconceive the concert and bring it to the screen, that’s what.

With seven cameras and three jibs, HMS produced a stellar, Emmy-nominated concert performance that might not have been what Lyric and Sir Andrew originally envisioned but in many respects became something more: an impressively successful tribute to Lyric’s living legend which could serve as a reminder of the glorious music that emanates from Lyric’s spectacular opera house and now be viewed by far more people than could ever fit into it.
